Maintenance of a power plant. Why is it important?

Electric generators provide an invaluable service when, for whatever reason, the main power grid fails. Many times, at the time of a blackout, our daily life is disrupted, because we cannot use any electrical device, any appliance, and that hinders everything. However, being machines with constant use, they tend to get out of adjustment and even wear their parts over time. Timely maintenance is required. So today we will tell you what the maintenance of electric generators consists of.

As you know, electric generators offer us the opportunity to carry out our day to day as normal in cases of eventual blackouts or failures in the electrical network. But, what would happen if, in addition to a failure in the commercial electrical network, the electric generator also failed?

We would certainly be in trouble. Maintenance of electric generators It is a procedure that we cannot ignore. Next, we will tell you about the types of electric generator maintenance, why they are important and where you can do it.

What is an electric generator?

It is evident that in order to know how to fix or preserve something in optimal conditions, it is necessary to know that something. So, what exactly is an electric generator? Well, it is a machine that combines power and efficiency when it comes to providing us with electricity when the main network has failed.

It is a machine capable of offering a safe and reliable electric current at a relatively low cost. It can offer from a few hundred Watts of power, such as small gasoline electric generators, which are even portable; until we can offer several thousand Watts, like our models, which provide up to almost 70 Kw: enough power to feed the electrical network of a residential complex, an office floor and even a hospital wing.

The advantages of an electric generator are evident and very profitable. Of course, it will always be possible to enjoy its benefits, as long as you have an electric generator in optimal conditions. But how exactly does an electric generator work and how does electric generator maintenance become necessary?

How does a generator work?

An electrical generator can be defined in the following terms: a machine that is responsible for generating electrical energy by capturing and using mechanical energy. What does this mean?

To explain it briefly, we must take into account the electromagnetic phenomenon. That is to say, that physical phenomenon, understandable through the laws of Faraday and Lenz, according to which the rotary movement of a magnetic field produces an electromotive force proportional to its speed.

Now, what does this mean in practical terms? The rotary movement is provided by a motor whose axis is attached to the alternator rotor, which has its own magnetic field. This movement, as you know, is mechanical energy of the kinetic type. The function of the alternator is to capture this movement, this kinetic energy, and convert it into electrical energy.

Its operation, theoretically, is quite simple. However, in practice, an incredible number of parts and moving elements are required, working together, in perfect synchrony for the electric generator to provide adequate, efficient and optimal electrical energy.

To achieve this, each of its pieces must obviously be in perfect condition. But, as it is a machine whose working time can easily reach twelve hours, and whose effort means the slow but progressive wear of moving parts, deterioration and malfunction are inevitable.

But don't worry, it is always possible to intervene on time.

Maintenance of a power plant

We see then that the maintenance of electrical generators is an unavoidable procedure. It is so important that no electric generator should work if it is not in optimal conditions.

So, for our electric generator to be able to cover our energy demand, we have two maintenance options, which depend on the level of wear or deterioration of the machine in question.

Preventive maintenance of power plants

This type of maintenance is undoubtedly preferable. However, it is not up to us to choose it: it depends on how the electric generator is. This maintenance is based on a complete and meticulous evaluation of the machine. This maintenance is as simple as it is effective: it consists of the daily care of the device.

That is, frequent cleaning of both the frame and its internal parts. The accumulation of dust and grease is prevented. In the same way, their levels of lubricants, coolants, fuel, and air, oil and fuel filters are examined.

This maintenance also includes the replacement of worn parts and the adjustment of those that, due to excessive movement and vibration, have ended up becoming out of adjustment.

Corrective maintenance of power plants

This type of maintenance is carried out when the electric generator has started to work irregularly. These are premature failures, serious breakdowns, either because their parts wore out, or because adequate preventive maintenance was not carried out correctly (or not carried out at all).

Thus, corrective maintenance already implies the replacement of parts. Since the electric generator is a machine whose parts must work together and synchronized, wear or mismatch in one will have a serious impact on the operation and state of the system in general.

This maintenance is clearly undesirable and we must strive to avoid it. It is, because it means stopping completely and for a long time the operation of the electric generator; Furthermore, repair costs, not to mention replacement parts, are high relative to preventative maintenance.

Why is the maintenance of electrical plants or generators important?

Since an electric generator that is not in perfect condition (whether due to a mismatch in its parts, wear and tear, or because the moving parts have too much friction between them) requires more fuel to generate electricity, the expenses of operation rise considerably. Not to mention that preventive maintenance is more comfortable and cheaper than a corrective one.

On the other hand, any machine that is used indiscriminately, under precarious conditions, without any kind of care or maintenance, is simply doomed to a short and inefficient useful life. Its parts will wear out individually, and the result is that working together will suffer and the machine will have to be totaled.

So, the maintenance of electric generators is necessary and important for two reasons, mainly:

  1. Keeping the electric generator in optimal conditions guarantees efficient power generation. That is, the production of electrical energy is guaranteed without spending more fuel than necessary.
  2. The maintenance of electrical generators is essential to extend the useful life of these machines. An electric generator can last a long time, working perfectly, if it is in optimal conditions and if periodic maintenance is carried out.
